Update Ubuntu from 22.04 to 24.04

In mid-April, Canonical released Ubuntu 24.04 LTS “Noble Numbat”, a new version of the Ubuntu desktop with long-term support. We are as of now offering an updated WebFAI, which can automatically install the following operating systems for you:

New additions:

  • Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (WebFAI and preinstalled)
  • Kubuntu 24.04 LTS (WebFAI and preinstalled)
  • Xubuntu 24.04 LTS (WebFAI only)
  • Ubuntu Mate 24.04 LTS (WebFAI only)

Still available:

  • Ubuntu 22.04 (WebFAI only)
  • elementary OS 7.1 (based on Ubuntu 22.04, WebFAI only)
  • TUXEDO OS 3 (still based on Ubuntu 22.04)

Removed:

  • Ubuntu Budgie
  • openSUSE Leap 15.5 (there will be no newer versions of Leap)

Why has TUXEDO OS not yet been updated to 22.04?

The reason for this is KDE neon, which has not yet been updated to Ubuntu 24.04. No exact date is currently known, but the developers are presumably waiting for the first update, which is expected in August with the version number 24.04.1. Canonical will also point you to the update from 22.04 to 24.04 at this time.

How does the update from Ubuntu 22.04 to 24.04 already work?

Note: Canonical does not support upgrades to Ubuntu 24.04 until after the release of 24.04.1 in August 2024. As many customers ask about this, we describe below a way to upgrade your Ubuntu 22.04 to 23.10 and then to 24.04 in two steps. If you update your system in this way, you do so at your own risk. We cannot provide support for this method!

If you still want to update your Ubuntu 22.04.x to 24.04, you must first ensure that the system is up to date with the latest version of 22.04. This can be done either via the graphical application Ubuntu Software or via the command line. But before you do this, go to Software & UpdatesUpdatesNotify me about new Ubuntu version in the drop-down menu and select the option For each new version.

If you prefer the graphical way and the system does not offer you updates automatically after booting up, open the software, which is symbolised in the sidebar by the icon of an orange suitcase, and click on Updates in the top right-hand corner. The number of packages to be updated depends on which minor version of Ubuntu 22.04 you are using. If you are already at 22.04.4, there will only be a few packages to install. At the end you should see the following picture:

As the update via Ubuntu Software does not always recognise all packages that offer an update, it makes sense to carry out the process directly on the command line. In any case, after the obligatory restart, you should check whether everything is up to date. The command should tell you at the end that no updates are pending.

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
(out)...
(out)0 updated, 0 newly installed, 0 to be removed and 0 not updated

In addition, you should remove any packages that are no longer required using sudo apt autoremove.

Now at the latest, as before every system upgrade, you should ensure that you have a backup of your important data. If it is an Ubuntu with GNOME desktop, the next step is to deactivate all GNOME extensions, as many of them may no longer be compatible after the upgrade and must be updated separately.

Then install the update-manager-core package if it is not already installed.

sudo apt install update-manager-core

And then initiate the update to 23.10 for the time being.

sudo do-release-upgrade

After a restart in Ubuntu 23.10, the second part of the upgrade follows. Please note the additional parameter -d.

sudo do-release-upgrade -d

Existing TUXEDO OS Installations

For existing installations of TUXEDO OS with Plasma 6, there is currently no possibility for a secure upgrade. We therefore strongly advise against this. However, there is also no urgency to upgrade, as TUXEDO OS is significantly more up-to-date than a classic Ubuntu 22.04.4
