This Week in TUXEDO OS #04-2025

Hello TUXEDO Fans and Open-Source Enthusiasts!

Outside, the snow sparkles, and the temperatures practically invite you to slide across the ice like a penguin. But while our feathered friends embrace winter cheerfully, we at TUXEDO have bundled up and diligently worked on new updates. Included are: improved drivers for your hardware, practical tips for the Dolphin file manager, and a lightweight e-book reader that ensures enjoyable reading—perfect for long winter evenings on the couch.

Enjoy reading,
The TUXEDO OS Team

In the TWIX, we want to keep you up to date on the latest developments in TUXEDO OS and introduce you to exciting applications as well as practical tips for the KDE desktop. But this section is not meant to be a one-way street: your feedback, ideas, and suggestions for improvement are most welcome! To make this easier, we’ve set up a thread on Reddit where you can reach us directly.

KDE App of the Week: Arianna E-Book Reader

Arianna is a simple e-book reader with library management capabilities. The application supports the popular epub format. Arianna automatically detects your books and organizes them by categories, genres, and authors.

The user interface is straightforward and uncluttered. While reading, you’ll see a progress bar, and you can turn pages using on-screen buttons or keyboard shortcuts. Arianna supports keyword searches and highlights matches on the page with a red outline. Matches found on other pages are listed in the search window, allowing you to jump directly to them.

Using KDE’s Baloo file indexing service, Arianna finds new books on your hard drive and connected devices and automatically adds them to your library. This makes Arianna a distraction-free e-book reader focused on essential functions. If you want advanced e-book management features, consider trying Calibre.

You can install Arianna via the Discover app store or as a Flatpak from Flathub. For more KDE apps updated in the past week, check out the column This Week in KDE Apps.

KDE Tips and Tricks: Managing Archives in the Dolphin File Manager

With KDE Plasma and the Dolphin file manager, managing ZIP files and other common archive formats like TAR.GZ is a breeze—additional software is often unnecessary. A double-click on an archive file opens its contents directly in the Ark archive manager. From there, you can drag and drop files out or add new ones. Alternatively, right-click the file and choose Extract » Extract Here or Extract To… to extract the contents to a specific location.

To compress files, select the desired files and directories in Dolphin. Under the Compress menu, options like ZIP or TAR.GZ are available. In the extended dialog of Compress To…, you can add passwords or split the archive into multiple parts.

A particularly useful feature is the Open Archives as Folders option, which you can enable in Dolphin’s settings under Configure » Configure Dolphin… » View. With this feature, Dolphin treats formats like ZIP, TAR.GZ, or 7Z as regular folders, allowing you to drag files directly into them.

For the RAR format, however, you’ll need to install additional packages. Use the following command: sudo apt install rar unrar. After installation, you can open, extract, and manage RAR files directly in Dolphin.
