Chassis quality

This category includes our evaluation of the general quality, workmanship and stability of the chassis, keyboard and touchpad.

We take into account properties such as the torsional rigidity of the chassis base and display, keyboard flexing, the stiffness of the hinges, the materials used and the overall haptic impression.

CPU performance

This rating shows the maximum CPU performance resulting from the fastest processor option available for this TUXEDO on the one hand and the power consumption that the cooling system is able to dissipate on the other.

The »Central Processing Unit« is the most important component of a computer and determines the overall performance of your TUXEDO. The CPU performance results from the amount of computing cores, so-called CPU cores, and their respective clock speeds. The same processor usually runs with lower performance on thin and light notebooks than on thicker machines due to less cooling capacity.

For surfing the web, checking emails or less demaning productive work, a low-end CPU performance is fully sufficient. Some image editing or cutting video files require a performance indicator of at least 30 %.

For more demanding image and video editing, software development or playing games, we recommend a mid-tier processor (50% or better). Highly demanding tasks like 4K video editing with filters and effects, modeling 3D animations with high polycounts or high-end gaming require an upperclass CPU with at least 70% performance rating.

Graphics performance

This rating shows the maximum graphics performance resulting from the fastest GPU option available on the one hand and the power consumption that the cooling system is able to dissipate on the other.

The graphics card is responsible for processing and rendering all visual contents on the screen. For surfing the web, writing emails or less demanding productive work, (very) low graphics performance is fully sufficient. Image editing with several effects or cutting videos can benefit from a faster graphics card and recommend a performance indicator of at least 20 %.

For more demanding video editing in 1080p resolution or higher, 3D modeling or mainstream gaming, we recommend a mid-tier graphics card (50 % or better). Very demanding tasks like video rendering in 4K with many filters and effects, working in big 3D CAD scenes or gaming in max quality settings and 2560x1600 pixels resolution require a performance indicator of at least 70 %.

Please note that you can adjust performance and fan settings to your preferences using our inhouse-developed and pre-installed TUXEDO Control Center. Lower fan speeds lead to higher temperatures and - if neccessary - to an automatic reduction in system performance (thermal throttling).

Thin and light notebooks usually get louder and/or warmer compared to thicker devices and have to run their fans more frequently and faster (= louder).

Mobility

This rating shows our evaluation of the portability factor based on chassis dimensions and weight (notebook and power supply).

Your actual portability requirement depends on your usage profile: If you rarely carry your TUXEDO over longer distances, »desktop replacement notebooks« (mobility score: ~50%) offer the best balance of portability and cooling for quieter and more pleasant fan acoustics or higher performance compared to thinner and lighter devices.

If you regularly carry your TUXEDO over longer distances at a stretch, we recommend a lighter total weight of 2.5 to 2.8 kg (incl. power supply; mobility score: ~70 %) - of course at the expense of performance and/or fan noise.

If performance (and possibly fan noise comfort) plays a very minor role and your TUXEDO should act as constant companion more time under your arm or in your bag than on your desk, a very light Linux notebook (less than 1.8 kg; mobility: 80% or higher) is a good choice.

The best processor ever on a TUXEDO: By featuring the AMD Ryzen 9 7945 HX, the Gemini 17 - Gen3 offers nothing less than one of the very best high-end mobile CPUs widely available today.

With the exception of the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D, a model-internal upgrade with solely a larger cache memory, the 32-thread processor impresses with an outstanding combination of performance and power efficiency which is on par with or even above the latest and most advanced high-end CPUs from Intel or Apple.

The Ryzen 9 7945HX offers not only excellent single-core and multicore performance, but also does so by consuming less power than the competition for unrivalled energy efficiency.

Fast NVIDIA graphics for work & play!

For high frame rates in games and GPU acceleration in productive software, the Gemini 17 - Gen3 is powered by NVIDIA's graphics processing units in the form of the GeForce RTX 4060 or RTX 4070.

But that's not all: While NVIDIA defines a huge range of performance levels between 35 and 115 watts, the Gemini 17 comes only with the fastest 115 watt variants!

The GeForce RTX 4060 equipped with 8 GB GDDR6 graphics memory offers great performance for high FPS gaming in Full HD or high graphics details in the Gemini 17's native display resolution.

The GeForce RTX 4070, also equipped with 8 GB GDDR6 VRAM, offers even more computing power and positions around 15 % more efficient and faster than its smaller sibling with the same power consumption.

Depending on the parallel CPU load, both GPUs can automatically increase their power budget by up to 10 watts to a total of 125 watts for a slight additional performance boost.

Solid Desktop Replacement Chassis in Classic Workstation Design

No, the Gemini 17 - Gen3 is not meant as flashy ultra-thin laptop for a vernissage or trendy café. It is not built to be seen. It is built for those who do and who prefer a classic Desktop replacement workstation in reasonable portable form factor.

With an overall height of just under 2.9 cm and a weight of 2.8 kg, the Linux desktop replacement is not designed to be carried around all the time, but nevertheless allows comfortable transportation over short to medium distances with ease.

In return, users are rewarded with a more capable cooling system that allows either higher performance or quieter fan noise than on many thin-and-light competitors, a large 17.3-inch monitor for getting your work done comfortably even without the need for an external screen, and a versatile ports selection that leaves nothing to be desired.

The black, robust enclosure consisting of aluminum (display lid) and rigid plastics (upper and bottom shell) features a classic, mostly muted workstation look, whose understatement without LED bells and whistles also qualifies the TUXEDO Gemini 17 for professional use.

Big 17.3-inch Display with 25 % Higher Color Gamut

For a laptop that is meant to replace a stationary desktop PC, it is essential to have a big and high quality display, which allows productive work and immersive gaming without the need to connect an external monitor.

The 38.3 x 21.5 cm screen provides a sharp, detailed rendering of texts, photos, movies and games due to a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. Thanks to its 100% DCI-P3 color gamut, which covers over 25% more colors than the default sRGB color space, the Gemini 17 is greatly suited for (semi-)professional image editing and makes multimedia and gaming highly enjoyable.

Speaking of gaming: AMD FreeSync, which dynamically adjusts the monitor's refresh rate of up to 165 Hz to the game's frame rate for smooth animations avoiding "screen tearing", and the optional direct connection of the laptop display to the NVIDIA graphics card via the so-called MUX switch for performance optimization ensure a particularly immersive gaming experience.

73-Wh-Akku for up to 4.5 Hours Video Playback

With a desktop-like processor and powerful graphics card, the TUXEDO Gemini 17 is primarily optimized for performance and designed as a portable desktop replacement workstation. Equipped with an internally screwed 73 Wh battery, the Linux powerhouse nevertheless allows for using it away from the power socket for 4 (web surfing) to 4.5 hours (local video playback).

For an energy-saving operation, we recommend our pre-configured, tuned power profiles as well as the manual settings for CPU power limit control (TDP) in our inhouse-developed and on your TUXEDO laptop pre-installed TUXEDO Control Center.

For stationary use plugged into a wall outlet, battery charge control ("Flexicharger") via the UEFI / BIOS as well as via the above-mentioned TUXEDO Control Center lets you define charge limits for increasing your battery's life span.

Up to 8 TB SSD Storage and 96 GB DDR5 RAM

Of course, TUXEDO Gemini 17 - Gen3 features both upgradable SO-DIMM RAM slots and expandable M.2 SSD mass storage.

After removing the bottom panel, which of course is covered by the warranty, 2x DDR5 SO-DIMM RAM slots for up to 96 GB and 2x M.2 SSD storage slots for up to 8 Terabytes are equally accessible for replacement as standard components like the Wi-Fi card, the internally screwed battery or the two fans.

For even more storage space, you get 10 GB myTUXEDO cloud storage for free with every TUXEDO laptop or PC. This way, you can access your data conveniently and securely (encrypted and hosted in compliance with german data protection regulations) at any time from anywhere and with any Internet-capable laptop, PC or smartphone.

2x USB-C, Mini DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.1

The ports selection hardly leaves anything to be desired: 2x DisplayPort 1.4 (1x via USB-C 3.2 Gen2, 1x Mini DisplayPort) and HDMI 2.1 allow to connect up to 3 external monitors and make the Gemini 17 ready for your virtual reality headset. Together with the notebook display, 4 screens can be used simultaneously.

While the USB-C port is connected to the Ryzen 9 7945HX's power-saving iGPU, the Mini DisplayPort and HDMI 2.1 are driven by the NVIDIA graphics for best possible performance for gaming or virtual reality (VR) headsets.

Besides a second USB-C port, which allows charging the laptop via a handy 100 watts power supply, also 2x USB-A and one RJ45 LAN port are available for data exchange, while the 2-in-1 headphone microphone port and the obligatory Kensington Lock conclude the connectivity setup.
