TUXEDO: Replacement batteries a given

Replaceable rechargeable batteries and batteries were once the norm. Users could remove the battery from their laptop or cell phone and replace it with a new one in just a few steps. This customer-friendly design was partly due to the fact that the battery runtimes of the devices or the durability of the batteries were not outstanding. The battery inevitably had to be replaceable. On the other hand, the major manufacturers had not yet optimized planned obsolescence.

Thanks to modern battery technology, mobile devices can usually get through an intensive workday without recharging. Only rarely do users still approach us with the wish to offer a device with an exchangeable battery system after all. But once the battery is worn out or even defective, buyers of devices from many established manufacturers are left out in the cold. Due to permanently installed batteries and glued housings, devices with old or defective batteries are often a case for expensive repair specialists or even the recycling center.

Law for more sustainability about to be passed

To strengthen consumer rights and improve sustainability, the EU Council and Parliament agreed at the beginning of December that manufacturers of electronic devices must design their products in such a way that the installed batteries can be replaced by the user without special tools. The corresponding EU law is expected to be passed in the coming weeks. From then on, it typically takes about three and a half years for the law to become binding.

We at TUXEDO think that such a regulation was long overdue. There is no planned obsolescence at our company. We are happy if our notebooks and computers still do their job reliably even after years. Our TUXEDO OS, which is based on the Linux kernel, supports all our TUXEDO computers as long as it is technically possible. There are no locked bootloaders. If you are dissatisfied with our operating system, the world of free operating systems is open to you.

Replaceable batteries in all TUXEDO notebooks.

We also do without tightly sealed cases and encapsulated/glued batteries. Specially shaped screws that can only be removed with special tools are also not found in TUXEDO computers. Hints on how to open the case back can be found in our FAQ collection. Buyers of a TUXEDO InfinityBook Pro 13/14 (up to Gen5) can also watch a video demonstrating how to open the device. By the way: Opening the service hatch (e.g. to clean the fan) does not void the warranty of TUXEDO computers. You can find the regulations on this in our warranty conditions.

If the battery of your TUXEDO notebook fails after the warranty has expired, we will be happy to help you organize a replacement battery. You can find directly available replacement and additional batteries for popular devices in our store. If you do not find what you are looking for there, please contact our support. We avoid adding batteries for much older devices or rarely sold products to our shop, in order not to resell customers years old stock. We are happy to breathe new life into older TUXEDOs. This has always been part of our normality.
