Howto for the Upgrade of the TUXEDO OS Base

The next time you restart your device with TUXEDO OS, you will be greeted with the message that a system update is available.

We put together a script to guide you through the upgrade. We have tested this script intensively in various constellations. We want to avoid errors, including installations that no longer start and data loss, as has happened with Ubuntu.

Nevertheless, it is crucial to create a backup of all important data. Please also make sure that your device is connected to the mains, or the upgrade will not start. You should allow at least 30 – 45 minutes for the upgrade.

In the first window, we point out that third-party packages, that are not compatible with TUXEDO OS may be removed. This refers to packages that do not originate from TUXEDO or Ubuntu repositories. If possible, you should remove such packages in advance. The entries for such repositories are automatically removed during the upgrade. You will find them after the upgrade under /etc/apt/backup/.

Clicking on OK will take you to the next window. Once you have read the warnings and confirmed that you have a backup, you can continue to the next step.

If your system is not up-to-date, we will take care of the necessary update in this step. Depending on how long it has been since your last update, this may take a while.

Once the system has been brought up-to-date, the actual upgrade to Ubuntu 24.04.1 will start after your approval.

The process cannot be canceled. If you reject the upgrade at this point, all previous changes to the sources list will be undone.

If you agree, after a simulation of the process, the actual upgrade will run, and you will be informed about
this with a notification window. Finally, if everything went well, you will receive a message that the upgrade to Ubuntu 24.04.1 has been successfully completed. Click on OK to restart the updated system.

After the upgrade, you can now copy repositories from 3rd parties from /etc/apt/backup and re-enter them in the source list under /etc/apt/sources.list.d/. Packages, that needed to be removed during the upgrade, can then be reinstalled.

If 3rd party packages remained in the system during the upgrade, it may happen that some packages could not be updated or installed.

If the upgrade could not be carried out successfully, the system may no longer start. We have a how-to online, that might help to bring the system back to life. If that also fails, the best option is to reinstall via WebFAI or the ISO image. Our support team will be happy to assist you if you need assistance.
