How to run Ubuntu perfectly on your TUXEDO

TUXEDO OS is currently based on Ubuntu 22.04 (Jammy Jellyfish). Customers often ask us whether they can also use the advantages of TUXEDO’s own developments under a standard Ubuntu or its derivatives, provided they use Tuxedo hardware. Here we show you how easy this is.

These instructions apply to the following distributions:

  • Everything with Ubuntu in the name in versions 18.04, 20.04, 22.04
  • KDE Neon (20.04, 22.04)
  • Mint (21.1, 21.2, 21.03 yet to come)
  • Elementary OS (6.1, 7.1)

To benefit from TUXEDO’s own developments, you only need to install our driver configuration service Tomte. However, as no TUXEDO sources are present in a standard Ubuntu after installation, this can easily be done by downloading the package tuxedo-tomte and installing it semi-automatically. The TUXEDO sources are added automatically.

To do this, navigate in your browser to our repository and download the package.

After a few seconds, you will be notified, that the package has been downloaded. Click on this message and select the entry Software Install in the window that appears, if it is not already highlighted. The Ubuntu Software application will then appear. Click on Installation in the top right-hand corner and wait a few seconds until Tomte is installed.

With Ubuntu derivatives such as KDE Neon or Linux Mint, their respective software shops are used for the installation due to a different desktop environment.

In addition to Tomte itself, TUXEDO Control Center (TCC) and the tuxedo-drivers package were installed. The TUXEDO sources are also written to the source list.

At the next and all subsequent system starts, TUXEDO Tomte is automatically executed in the background and checks whether drivers, kernel or similar are missing or outdated. The program automatically recognizes whether the system needs something or not. When the work is done, Tomte closes itself again.

Of course, you can also interact with Tomte. You can find out how to do this in the above mentioned article What is TUXEDO Tomte?.
